Some exciting things are happening at the Boys and Girls Club in this coming month!

To begin with we are planning our movie day for the spring. We will be viewing kicking and screaming as well as talking about healthy competition and eating habits.

Also, next week, we will be going to the art room to help the teenagers with their art projects! This will be a great experience for us to share some of our knowledge outside of sports.

We are sad that our time with the Boys and Girls Club is coming to an end soon, but we are still looking forward to all the great things ahead.

February Entry

After a relaxing winter break, we are now back at school and ready to continue volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club!

Due to the weather at the start of this semester we were not able to start going to the club until very recently. We have started to get back into the rhythm of going in regularly to provide support to the facility though.

Although the semester is still young we have some big plans. Our major project this semester will be to have a movie night that we can use to talk about healthy lifestyles and eating habits. We are planning on showing the movie Kicking and Screaming because it will be a fun movie for the kids as well as a good way to demonstrate healthy versus unhealthy ways to participate in sports. We will also be preparing some healthy snacks that are easy for kids to make on their own to provide examples of how to eat healthily after school.

Our other major goal for this semester is to come in at a more regular basis than we did last semester. We are shooting for at least an hour each week. We are making this a goal because we realize that if we want to make an impact on the kids we are helping they need to see us on a regular basis.

We are super pumped to be back at the Boys and Girls Club after our break and we are looking forward to the semester!

December Entry

This last month at the Boys and Girls Club has been very eventful for us. We started out the month with our soccer day, which was a huge success! We brought new goals and soccer balls for the club since theirs were falling apart. Both the kids and the staff loved having the new equipment, and you could see how excited they were to play with it. We started with a couple of quick drills and then started playing larger games. It was amazing to see how quickly the kids picked up the game and how enthusiastic they were to play with us. It was such a success that whenever we went after that the kids would ask us if we were going to play soccer again and would get disappointed when we would say we weren’t.

It is obvious that the kids really enjoy having us there. Often times if we were not there they would have no adults to play with. Often times right when we walk in the door we are immediately asked to play a game of ping pong or foosball. It feels good to know that we are making an impact in the kids lives, and nothing feels better than seeing the kid’s eyes light up when they see us or their excited shouts of greeting.

We are currently planning for our next big event that will take place next semester. We are thinking of having a movie night where we bring in healthy snacks for the kids. With this event we want to provide a fun way for the kids to learn about healthy eating habits and show them what they can do at home to make healthier choices with the foods they eat.

This has been an amazing semester of volunteering and we can’t wait to get started on next semester. Everyone at the Boys and Girls Club, staff and kids, have been great and we can’t wait to see them after the holidays.

October Entry

As our season comes to an end, we have even more soccer to be excited about. Our soccer day at the Boys and Girls Club is coming up and we are super pumped! For our soccer day we will be bringing new goals and balls to the club  so that the kids have good equipment to play with. Our goal is to give the kids a taste of what our soccer practices look like, while also demonstrating how much fun it can be just to get out and play with your friends. We will run some drills at the start to get the kids warmed up, and then we will start playing small sided games. From what we have seen so far the kids should enjoy the day, as well as learn that it doesn’t take a lot of effort to get out and be active.

The staff at the Boys and Girls Club have been awesome helping us set up our activity, as well as accommodating our weird schedules. Between soccer and classes we don’t have a lot of time to go volunteer, so there have been long gaps between our appearances at the Club. We want to be there more, especially because the kids are always so excited to see us, but it can be hard to fit it in when we’ve been gone all weekend for soccer and have classwork to make up.

Hopefully now that the season is wrapping up we will have more time to be at the club. Other than that our project is going well, and we are having an experience far better than we ever imagined when starting this project.

September Entry

This month we started volunteering at the Henderson Unit of the Boys and Girls Club. We first got acquainted with staff and the many programs that the club runs. We were very impressed with the facilities. There are game rooms, a nice gym, and areas for study and relaxation. We then started hanging out with the kids, which went far better than expected. The kids immediately surrounded us asking us questions and sharing little tidbits of their own life. You could tell they were excited to have us there, and that made it a lot easier for us to form some relationships with the kids.

Our first visit we ended up playing dodgeball with the kids for a couple hours which was a ton of fun. We started out taking it easy on the kids, but after they started telling us to step up our game we had some pretty competitive matches.

It was obvious that the kids looked up to us as role models, and were inspired by having us there with them. They kept asking us about what it was like to go to college and play sports. This really got us thinking about what image we portray to the community at large, and specifically to the kids we meet as student athletes. As representatives of Drury University and the Men’s Soccer team we realize that the example we set is important. The amount of influence we had with the kids allowed us to help them resolve arguments and to get them to work as a team. We want to use this in the future to inspire the children to make healthy choices with their lives.
